June 17, 2024Tern AI’s GPS Alternative
Tern AI, a startup aiming to reduce reliance on GPS, has introduced an Independently Derived Positioning System (IDPS) as a low-cost alternative for navigation. This new system addresses the increasing threat of GPS jamming and spoofing by foreign adversaries, providing a more secure solution for critical systems like aviation, emergency response, and military defence. Unlike traditional GPS, which relies on satellite signals, Tern AI’s IDPS uses AI to process sensor data from vehicles and smartphones, ensuring precise positioning without external satellite dependency.
AI-Driven Positioning
Tern AI’s IDPS leverages real-time data from vehicle and phone sensors, combined with third-party map data, to deliver accurate location information. This innovative approach can be integrated into existing car infotainment systems or smartphones, making it accessible and cost-effective. The company has raised a $4.4 million seed round and is preparing for commercial launch in September, with plans to engage major mapping vendors like Google Maps and Apple Maps to utilise their technology.
Future Prospects and Validation
Currently undergoing internal testing aligned with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s standards, Tern AI’s IDPS boasts an accuracy within 4 metres. The startup is also set to begin real-world testing with a major logistics partner in July. Tern AI aims to revolutionise navigation technology, offering a secure, scalable solution that could benefit industries such as emergency services, autonomous delivery, and potentially, defence sectors in the future.
