June 13, 2024AI Adoption Surges Among Students and Teachers
A recent poll by Impact Research for the Walton Family Foundation indicates a significant rise in AI adoption among K-12 students and teachers, particularly with the use of ChatGPT. Over the past year, familiarity with ChatGPT among teachers increased from 55% to 79%, and among students, it rose from 37% to 75%. Moreover, 46% of teachers and 48% of students now use ChatGPT weekly, demonstrating a substantial spike in usage compared to last year (CNBC).
Positive Reception and Educational Impact
The poll reveals that the majority of students, undergraduates, and parents hold favourable views of AI chatbots, with 70% of K-12 students expressing a positive perception. The educational sector sees AI as a valuable tool for enhancing teaching efficiency and student learning. For instance, Khan Academy’s AI tool, Khanmigo, has significantly benefited students, saving teachers 5-10 hours per week. However, only 25% of teachers have received training on AI chatbots, highlighting the need for further professional development in this area.
Equity and Challenges in AI Integration
The data also indicates equitable AI usage in education, with minority groups adopting AI for educational purposes at higher rates. However, concerns about AI’s impact on in-class lectures and the rise of online cheating persist. Nearly 20% of teachers report a negative impact of ChatGPT, raising questions about the accuracy of AI compared to human instructors and its potential role in facilitating academic dishonesty. As AI continues to reshape the educational landscape, addressing these challenges and ensuring effective integration are paramount.
