June 7, 2024AI Attempts to Offer Advice to Younger Selves
MIT researchers have developed an AI-powered chatbot aimed at simulating an individual’s older self, offering guidance and counsel to younger versions. The system, reflecting the user’s behaviour and inputs, attempts to provide wisdom and insights on career choices, familial relationships, and other life matters. However, while the concept aims to address regrets and what-ifs, its efficacy in altering life trajectories remains uncertain.
Challenges in Altering Decision-Making
Despite the allure of hindsight, the chatbot’s ability to influence decision-making is limited. Terry Pratchett’s observation underscores the inherent challenge: individuals evolve over time, making it difficult for their older selves to resonate with their younger counterparts. Moreover, youthful defiance often disregards elder advice, suggesting that the chatbot’s impact may be muted in the face of youthful independence.
Reflecting on the Nature of Regret and Wisdom
The aspiration to rectify past mistakes underscores the human experience of grappling with regrets and seeking wisdom. However, the journey towards understanding often requires a lifetime of experiences. While AI endeavours to bridge this gap, it remains a tool, unable to fully capture the complexity of human decision-making and growth.
