Retell AI is enabling companies to build AI-powered “voice agents” to handle customer phone calls and perform basic tasks like scheduling appointments. According to a TechCrunch article by Kyle Wiggers, these agents are powered by large language models fine-tuned for customer service and a speech model that converts text to speech. This solution aims to reduce costs and wait times for call centres, which are increasingly adopting AI to scale operations. TechSci Research predicts the global market for contact centre AI could reach nearly $3 billion by 2028.
Efficient and Scalable Customer Interaction
Companies, including small- and medium-sized businesses like telehealth provider Ro, can create voice agents using Retell’s low-code platform or by uploading custom models. Co-founder Evie Wang emphasised the investment in enhancing the voice conversation experience, aiming for low latency and robust handling of edge cases. In a test, the bot effectively scheduled a dentist appointment, responding promptly and staying on script despite attempts to confuse it.

The Business Process Outsourcing sector in Fiji is one of its highest employers and nets a total of FJ$70 million yearly in foreign exchange receipts. For most Fijians, it is an easy employer when other industries are saturated and cannot accept new intakes after completing education. Any premature adoption of this software would ultimately decimate this very lucrative industry, and would lead to increases in poverty and all associated societal ills as a result of the unemployment caused.
