May 15, 2024AI Outperforms Humans in Moral Judgments: Georgia State University Study
A recent study conducted by Georgia State University’s Psychology Department has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) surpasses humans in making moral judgments. Led by Associate Professor Eyal Aharoni, the research, published in Nature Scientific Reports, examined the ethical decision-making abilities of GPT-4, a sophisticated language model. In a surprising turn of events, participants consistently rated AI-generated responses higher in terms of virtuousness, intelligence, and trustworthiness compared to responses generated by humans (DailyAI).
AI Triumphs in Moral Reasoning
The study, inspired by the Turing test, aimed to assess whether AI could exhibit moral reasoning indistinguishable from human behaviour. Results showed that not only did AI often outshine humans in providing morally sound responses, but participants were also able to correctly identify AI-generated responses with remarkable accuracy. Despite acknowledging certain limitations, such as potential biases in AI training data, the study highlights the evolving role of AI in shaping societal norms and decision-making processes.
What Next? What Are The Possibilities?
Now that we know that AI can be proven to be rational in decision making, one may wonder: what next in this scenario? What now, now that AI has proven to be less emotional when considering options, whether work or pleasure? Will we be able to delegate important decisions to AI, or at least allow it to assist in choosing options in order to move forward with tasks? Even with all these possibilities, the bias in training data and input error may skew the decision-making output; however, the fact remains that there is a rational output to be expected when using AI to make decisions.
