The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) union members have secured a significant deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to protect voice actors from the misuse of their performances in creating AI-generated clones (AI Business). This follows a major strike action which was effected in mid-2023.
Compensation and Recognition
Under the three-year contract, voice actors will be compensated if their performances are used to create synthetic voices for recognizable characters, irrespective of perfect replication. The contract acknowledges the unique character voices often found in animation.
Key Provisions of the Contract
Producers are obligated to notify and negotiate with the actor’s union before considering the use of digital voices, ensuring actor consent. Additionally, voice actors are entitled to residuals for digitally altered performances in foreign languages.
Forward Momentum and Retroactivity
The agreement, effective retroactively from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2026, applies to animated series, mini-series, and TV movies, excluding theatrical animated movies. Momentum from previous strike victories played a role in securing substantial wage increases and additional holidays.
Resolving Backlash and Looking Ahead
Initial backlash against SAG-AFTRA’s partnership with Replica led to concerns among voice actors, but negotiations resulted in the recent agreement with AMPTP, marking significant progress in protecting voice actors from AI exploitation. Both parties recognise the need for ongoing adjustments to adapt to technological advancements.
