March 20, 2024CoPilot Unleashed: ‘God Mode’ AI Raises Concerns!
March 22, 2024A recent Facebook advertisement by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) has drawn significant backlash due to its unconventional use of AI-generated artwork. The ad, depicting a couple in a concert hall setting, has been met with ridicule from both creative workers and industry unions (The Guardian).
Criticism of the Ad
The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) labelled the artwork as “the worst AI-generated artwork we’ve seen,” criticising its lack of professionalism and respect towards audiences and musicians alike. Comments on the post echoed these sentiments, with many expressing disappointments in the orchestra’s decision not to employ traditional artists.
Response from Queensland Symphony Orchestra
Despite the uproar, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra defended its use of the AI-generated image, citing a commitment to innovation and experimentation. However, industry professionals like freelance photographer Daniel Boud criticised the ad as “poorly considered,” advocating for authentic representations of musicians and concert settings.
Debate Surrounding AI in Art
The criticism directed at the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s AI-generated ad underscores the importance of nurturing and supporting local artists and artisans as well as the loss of ‘brand goodwill’ when bad AI is engaged. As discussions about AI’s impact on creativity and cultural preservation unfold, we Pacific Islanders are also reminded of the value of both indigenous and contemporary art forms and the need to champion their continued practice and recognition, fostering a sense of cultural pride, identity, trust and even general competency. If you miss, your brand can suffer.
